Choosing Starlink was not a straightforward choice. In our part of Tuscany, traditional fiber and copper connections struggle. We tested 3 local providers using FWA and 4G, but none could support more than two people working simultaneously.

Pro and Cons Starlink Tuscany

In a nutshell: The delivery was within 2 weeks, installation is right out of the box, and the speed is fantastic.

The Pro:

• Easy installation, fantastic speed, and no contracts. It has changed how we run our local business and how our guests enjoy their stay.

The Con:

• Higher power consumption and the cost—which has stabilized at €40/month for the standard plan (with a €29 Lite option now available). At Villa Olivemare, we absorb these costs so our guests have the best experience.

Starlink Price vs Performance

Our experience has been fantastic. We have stress-tested the system with multiple guests:

Average Speed: 200Mbps Download / 20Mbps Upload.

Capacity: We tested 4 guests on simultaneous Video Conferences (Zoom/VPN); we only reached 30% of the total capacity.

Reliability: 99.82% uptime. Even during heavy Tuscan summer storms, outages rarely exceed 2-3 minutes.

What is Starlink & How is it different?

Not everyone could connect to the internet because they live in places where there is no internet service or it is too slow or the infrastructure is to expensive to provide the connection.
To solve this problem, Starlink is sending thousands of small satellites into space that can communicate with each other and with Communication centre on Earth. These satellites are around the Earth and closer to the earth as any other satellites to allow a quicker communication in between.
They form a network that covers the whole planet like a giant blanket.

Outage – Error – Support – Upgrades

• January 2023 (Installation day)
  Random on/off connection problem, this was solved on the same day (Support) after 2.5h connection was stable
  
• March 2023
  We experience slow connection speed. Reboot Router solved the problem. Outage 2min
  
• April 2023
  Heavy thunderstorm + strong lightning + hail. Outage 3min
  
• June 2023 We moved and had to uninstall and reinstall our Starlink equipment. The installation was very easy and we also had to extend the cable length ourselves. Overall, everything went smoothly and there were no problems.

• 2024 One year past since we use Statlink with 99,82% (using 24/7) stable connection, we cannot compare to other local providers as there is no statistics online.We are confident that no local providers reached these numbers.
  
• 2024 New Italy Monthly Price from 50 to 40 Euro
  
• 2024 March new 29 Euro Monthly price for Italian citizen, Lower Speed: This price is for their “Low Priority” plan. Speeds may be slower, especially during peak usage times, compared to their standard plan (which costs more)
  
• 2025 July SpaceX’s Starlink experienced a significant global outage that knocked tens of thousands of users offline for approximately 2.5 hours, occurring shortly after the launch of T-Mobile’s “T-Satellite” direct-to-cell service.
  
• January 2026: System remains 100% stable for all B&B guests.
